*He’s young, Italian and does something that is, plainly, different. We decided to ask FontFace a few questions. Let’s go.*

**1\. How and when did you start? Your work is about lettering, are you coming from the writing world or are you part of the new generation?**

I’ve always been involved in flat graphics, in black and white, in simple concepts directed to everyone, and that’s what I hoped to express with my work. I started using stickers to make my creations, or my ethical/politcal Ideas, “public”; then, much later fontface was born, and I started producing and pasting stickers on the streets and without even knowing it I found myself in the middle of the movement that everybody calls street art… so I don’t come from writing… if you want to frame me the right place is the new school… (but I don’t like to be framed hehehe) *[yes, yes, that's what most pop bands say in their interviews - fat&proud]*

**2\. Why did you choose using letters for your characters? and what’s the role of the external environment?**

Letters and numbers are under our eyes and in our hands almost all day long, it’s beautiful to see how seemingly uninteresting things can have different interpretations.
The outer environment is essential, because it lets me change the role of things often unnoticed (like trash bins) and perhaps I dare to gift some distraction to the observers’ daylife.

*3\. we saw the photos of your shows. nice stuff. do you think you’re art makes more sense inside or outside a gallery?*

They’re two wholly different things: street is more accessible and fun because it needs to be interpreted, it’s the creations that have to fit on existing spaces; the gallery on the contrary lets you furnish a neutral space the way you like it but has a limited people flow…

*4\. how important is it to be original? where does quotation (ie the Mona Lisa on your website homepage) ends and the plagiarism starts?*

Being original is essential… sincerely I’m a reinterpretation lover, my Mona Lisa for instance is the respectful remake of the art icon itself. Moreover, from my point of view the plagiarism never starts… if I had to copy I’d prefer to do something else…

**5\. Your artworks are simple, direct and easily understandable. the access to the market is a strong temptation: do you think is it possible to “sell” one’s work without bitching one selves?**

If by “market” you mean selling canvases, prints or the like I don’t think it’s bitching but surviving… but if you mean selling your own stuff to a multinational corporation that uses it for a season burning all the artistic meaning… then everyone is free to do what he wants… your work gets destroyed but maybe your pocket will be full…

**6\. where do you find the inspiration for your letters (artists, type foundries, street artist or writers…)? which font face do you use?**

My work can resemble a mathematical study… but it’s not, it’s always immediate and it doesn’t allow corrections… it’s strongly against any common graphics trend and against whom likes the CTRL+Z stuff… for instance opening Illustrator my default font is Myriad and it’s the font I used for the large majority of my creations… I think I took inspiration specially from my two favourites artists Mondrian and Haring and then… I hope I’ve added something

il mio lavoro puo sembrare uno studio quasi matematico..in realta è sempre immediato e non ammette correzioni … va assolutamente contro tutte le tendenze della grafica comune e di chi ama fare “MELA Z”..ad esempio aprendo illustrator il mio font di default è il Myriad…ed è il myriad il font che ho usato per la maggior parte delle mie creazioni … l’ispirazione credo di averla presa in particolare da i miei due preferiti Mondrian e Haring e poi…spero di averci messo del mio
